About the Event

Can Analytics give Your Firm a Margin and Collateral Advantage?

Buy-side firms are busy clarifying if and when they will have to comply with Uncleared Margin Rules (UMR) and they’re reviewing regulatory guidance alerts that will help them adjust to the new margining levels of over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives transactions.

Buy-side firms have little time to waste as the UMR rules are hitting home across the globe with Phase Four firms coming into scope this September 2019, and Phase Five firms facing compliance in September 2020.

Yet it’s important for all the firms affected that they step back for a moment and try to gauge how they can find a competitive advantage amid the stampede to compliance.

While firms are reviewing providers and options, the bottom line is that they will need to become expert at managing their margining in ways they never had to before.

With such a broad impact of the new rules, firms need to ensure that they have the right operational framework in place in advance of when they are required to post and call the new margin.

Equally importantly, firms must make sure they have margin calculation and monitoring analytics to ensure they can stay under the thresholds, whenever possible. This will require additional transparency, in-depth pre-trade analytics, what-if modeling for portfolios, and an embrace of emerging best practices.

Ultimately, firms will need cope with the realities of optimizing capital allocation, and the constant mitigation of the impacts of the UMR regime upon fund management.

Tune into the experts at SmartStream and Cassini Systems as they address the following questions:

  • Is it possible for a firm to build its UMR margining calculation matrix?
  • What needs to be done as far as negotiations with counterparties and custodians?
  • How can firms essentially mutualize the costs of what is likely to be higher margin posting requirements?
  • How can analytics help a firm gain competitive advantage amid the stampede to compliance?
  • What are some of the “deadlines within the deadlines” such as getting your counterparties up to speed so that your firm is ultimately compliant?
  • What are some examples of the Standard Initial Margin Model (SIMM) common methodology and other model variations that need customization?
  • What is the best way to manage tri-party and third-party margining relationships?
  • What are the pitfalls to avoid for the following?
    • negotiations;
    • SIMM systems;
    • implementation;
    • And paperwork
