Kimberly Marten

Kimberly Marten is a professor and the chair of the political science department at Barnard College, and directs the Program on U.S.-Russia Relations at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute. Her current research focuses on Russian security issues and US-Russia relations. The Council on Foreign Relations published her special report, Reducing Tensions between Russia and NATO (2017). She has written four books, most recently Warlords: Strong-Arm Brokers in Weak States (Cornell, 2012). Her first book, Engaging the Enemy: Organization Theory and Soviet Military Innovation (Princeton, 1993) received the Marshall Shulman Prize. She has written 25 academic journal articles and book chapters, and has policy articles in The New Republic, The Washington Quarterly, ForeignAffairs.com, the Washington Post’s Monkey Cage blog, War on the Rocks, Lawfare, and the Huffington Post, among others. She is a frequent media commentator, and appeared on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart. She earned her undergraduate degree at Harvard and Ph.D. at Stanford. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Nikos Passas

Nikos Passas specializes in the study of corruption, illicit financial/trade flows, sanctions, informal fund transfers, remittances, terrorism, white-collar crime, financial regulation, organized crime and international crimes. He is currently Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Northeastern University, where he served for a number of years as Co-Director of the Institute for Security and Public Policy. Aside from his many other professorial roles at collegiate institutions around the globe, Passas offers training to law enforcement, intelligence and private sector officials on regulatory and financial crime subjects. He regularly serves as an expert witness in court cases or public hearings and consults with law firms, financial institutions, private security and consulting companies and various organizations, including the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), OECD, OSCE, the IMF, the World Bank, other multilateral and bilateral institutions, the United Nations (ODC, Development Programme, Security Council, etc.), the Caribbean FATF, the European Union, the US National Academy of Sciences, research institutions and government agencies in all continents. His current projects focus on financial crisis, public debt and institutional corruption, the role of banks in cross-border corruption, anti-corruption authorities, assessment of anti-corruption practices, integrity and accountability, trade-facilitated financial crime, the regulation of remittance flows in cash-based societies, and on use of IT for the enhancement of due diligence conducted by financial institutions. His law degree is from the Univ. of Athens (LL.B.), his Master’s from the University of Paris-Paris II (D.E.A.) and his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh Faculty of Law. He is a member of the Athens Bar (Greece). He is fluent in 6 languages and plays classical guitar. Show Less
