Former TIAA-CREF Strategist Joins MSCI
Brett Hammond, a former chief investment strategist for mutual fund giant TIAA-CREF, will be joining MSCI as the head of index applied research. In this new position, Hammond says that his team will have “a foot in research and a foot in working with clients.” MSCI provides investment decision support tools and offers indices, portfolio risk and performance analytics, and governance tools, including Barra, RiskMetrics and ISS.
Hammond primarily chose to switch companies because of the similarity in their approaches. He describes both TIAA-CREF and MSCI as “very focused on clients” and “very devoted to low cost and transparency.”
His forthcoming projects will help MSCI and its efforts to offer conventional investment styles and strategies such as passive and active management via indices. He will also help advance MSCI’s risk premia strategy indices, which often use weighting methods other than price. Hammond describes risk premia as a “new way of thinking about investment” that can fit together with active and passive management styles.
Hammond will be reporting to Remy Briand, managing director and global head of index and ESG research.
Before TIAA-CREF, Hammond worked for nearly a decade at the National Academies (the National Research Council) in Washington, D.C., where he was a member of the senior management team, overseeing behavioral and social sciences studies. He began his career teaching public policy via the University of California system at UCLA and Berkeley.
