The now-famous “Fearless Girl” sculpture by Kristen Visbal and commissioned by State Street Global Advisors (SSGA) sparked a huge reaction across the globe when it debuted in 2017.
The sculpture focused attention on the need for more women in leadership positions in business, including more representation on boards of directors.
Initially, the sculpture faced off the famous Charging Bull sculpture, created by Arturo Di Modica, located in the Bowling Green section of Wall Street in downtown Manhattan. The Fearless Girl has since been moved so that it stands across from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) building.
FTF News conducted a video interview with Dominica Ribeiro, head of institutional marketing, North America at SSGA, about the massive appeal of the sculpture.
Part of that appeal is the hope embodied in the four-foot-tall bronze statue that somehow the gender gap that exists in leadership positions among businesses will someday end.
“If we were at a standstill — continue status quo, keep doing what we’ve been doing — it would be 100 years before we could close that gender gap,” Ribeiro tells FTF News. “So, I think not only is the timing perfect, but I also think that regardless of your gender, your ethnicity, your sexual preference, your religion — whoever you are — you can relate to ‘Fearless Girl.’ ”
The interview was conducted during ISITC’s 25th Annual Securities Operations Summit in Boston this past March. ISITC is an industry trade group focused on creating and promoting securities operations standards.
ISITC is holding its Fall Forum 2019, from September 15 to 17, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. More information about the upcoming event can be found here.
